Where is St. Cuthbert's? Where is St. Cuthbert's?
History

The 1930's
By 1930 ivy had grown all over the walls of the church, hardly a brick could be seen. New radiators were installed in 1931 costing £12-15-1d (£12-75) and for some reason in 1935 curtains were purchased for the chancel. The big event of the decade was the jubilee celebration held in November 1937. From 1936 onwards a special fund was set up to raise money to purchase a pulpit. Over £26 was raised, which covered the cost of the new pulpit (£19) and sundry other Jubilee items. The church was now complete.

The 1940's
1939, the start of the second world war, and Cheadle played it's part in the war effort. Engineering works at Demming's turned to producing parts for Lancaster bombers. A notable additional item in the accounts of St. Cuthbert's for 1939 is cloth for the blackout--- £5-1s-11d (£5.09). A new fund commenced to buy earphones for use in church, but presumably this was affected by the war, as it was not until 1947 that they were installed. According to accounts for 1940, St. Cuthbert's paid £2.00 to have it's organ tuned! In 1948 the parish had an evangelistic campaign led by Dr. Howard Guinness. St. Cuthbert's played it's part in this, holding various meetings and lunches.

At the beginning of the 1950's an extension fund was started and in 1955 a new hall (the "covie hut") was erected at a cost of £330 (half the cost of building the church). It was dedicated on Trinity Sunday that year. Just to confuse people, for a while, the curate living in the curatage was Rev. Peter Cottingham, curate of St. Philip's; St. Cuthbert's curate, Rev. J.M.C. Colbourn, lodged at the rectory. During his time, there seems to have been a spate of fainting in church and so a fan was installed in the roof in 1957 costing £52.00

In 1958 Mr. C.S. Huxley, who had been organist and choirmaster for many years, retired. The organ itself was beginning to feel it's age and was constantly requiring repair.
