The 1930's By 1930 ivy had grown all over the walls of the church, hardly a brick could be seen. New radiators were installed in 1931 costing £12-15-1d (£12-75) and for some reason in 1935 curtains were purchased for the chancel. The big event of the decade was the jubilee celebration held in November 1937. From 1936 onwards a special fund was set up to raise money to purchase a pulpit. Over £26 was raised, which covered the cost of the new pulpit (£19) and sundry other Jubilee items. The church was now complete. The 1940's The 1950'sAt the beginning of the 1950's an extension fund was started and in 1955 a new hall (the "covie hut") was erected at a cost of £330 (half the cost of building the church). It was dedicated on Trinity Sunday that year. Just to confuse people, for a while, the curate living in the curatage was Rev. Peter Cottingham, curate of St. Philip's; St. Cuthbert's curate, Rev. J.M.C. Colbourn, lodged at the rectory. During his time, there seems to have been a spate of fainting in church and so a fan was installed in the roof in 1957 costing £52.00 In 1958 Mr. C.S. Huxley, who had been organist and choirmaster for many years, retired. The organ itself was beginning to feel it's age and was constantly requiring repair. |
