St Cuthbert's World Project

The Diocese of Western Tanganyika, Tanzania is very poor and has a sizeable non-Christian population. Christians face some opposition from certain groups. Most of the people are subsistence farmers with a standard of living below the U.N. poverty line of $1 per day. Farming is still primitive using little beyond basic tools such as hoes. The infrastructure is poor and there are few good roads, little electricity or other power. Unemployment is high for those not involved in farming. Public transport is virtually non-existent and many walk 5-10 km to attend church on Sundays.

A number of rural churches have grown to significant congregations and have been trying to construct their own church buildings for at least three years. Using local materials and voluntary labour, they have been able to construct the foundations and brick walls. However they often lack the resources to purchase materials like metal sheets, cement, aggregates, stone and sand etc. needed for roofing, plastering, flooring etc. Barnabas Fund has agreed to provide 80% of the materials costs to complete the main structures as they can find the remaining 20% themselves. This covers particularly the items needed for the roof structure and covering, for flooring and plastering inside, and for doors/windows.

The Barnabas Fund have initially committed to help with two churches with budgets of £7,410 and £6,325, and have already sent the first grant. The remaining three churches may be tackled when the first two are largely completed. The other three come with current budgets of £6,110, £6,070 and £4,720. As you can see from the photos, these are sizeable structures and the congregations are in the hundreds, making for a very cost-effective project-set.

The Barnabas Fund have received no gifts as of this point and St Cuthbert's are looking at funding the Kidyama Church with a budget of £4,720.
